Women who change the World

Have you ever traveled through the fragrance of an orange blossom grove early in the evening, I have. It is one of the most intoxicating smells on this earth and the early evening with it's moisture laden air is the perfect conveyor for this intoxicating fragrance. You are transported somewhere foreign, exotic and although it took me a while to figure out that wonderful fragrance was coming from off the Florida highway, yet I could not see one orange grove but I sure could smell it's gorgeous bountiful fragrance.
Before you read on, this is not always a pretty story, so be warned.

There are women that you meet everyday who do things that do make a difference. They do it with out any questions, no fan fare, they just see a need and start getting busy at the task at hand to lend a hand. Of course, some men do these things too.  A woman will act to help others without question of pay or other compensation and quite often even a woman's business decisions are motivated about the future of women and children. Women for the most part are nurturers and it's when you have been nurtured, are nurturing or have nurtured you see what needs to be done to help others.
There are women who help others in a war torn country that has a beautiful history and culture that has been destroyed by greed, guns, drugs and a religious fanaticism. Afghanistan, it is one of the most beautiful places on this earth, which since the 60's has produced more opium than any other country and exported this product at the greatest risk to it's women and children. Opium has changed the lives of women and children from Afghanistan to North America and not for the good. Despite having a rich culture and history of family, by nurturing this crop for us in the west this act by man has changed the lives of Afghanistan women and children and taking away their power of voice in the process. The power of Afghanistan is with the men. It may just be a woman who is creating a market for another crop, a woman from Antigonish Nova Scotia is doing what many other business people should be doing. Invest in a war torn country in a positive way which will change the lives of it's people for the positive and maybe diminish the power of opium to change lives there and in North America as well.
Barbara Stegemann is a Canadian woman who knows the power of fragrance and money, how it will improve a country that has seen it's rich history and culture blown up, torn up and yet has decided that she could be the catalyst for change.
Then there is the story of mining in the Congo, if you own a cell phone, a computer, a digital camera or any other electronic device, then you must know where the minerals come from to support your technology. People in other countries pay a price for our ease of lifestlye, even me, who is blogging about the problem. It can weigh heavily on your mind.
Here are to links to 3 very different stories, one is about motivating change, hope and the future of hope. The other 2 are about despair running amuck. These are foreign lands and show that we here in Canada, each one of us, in every city, suburb, every town and village can make choices that have in impact on those people who live in countries less fortunate than ours. To me, it shows how much we need research and development, how we need this restored in our country to change the way we live and our impact on others in this small world. These are stories about counting our blessings and what opportunity means to different people in different lands.
